As highlighted in our last newsletter, we will be starting our autumn/winter conservation programme shortly. The first series of tasks are available to view in the Events Diary and are open for bookings. Thanks to all of you who let us have your preferences for task days in Pondhead. Over 76% gave their preferences as Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday and the lowest preference was for Saturday (3%). The clear favourites were Tuesdays and Thursdays. As a result of this survey our autumn/winter programme will commence on these days initially, especially during the Limewood sewer works as the contractors will then know the days that our volunteers will be on site.
We have now heard that these works will commence next week, and it is not expected to be finished until December. The main contractors are Farwells and they will need to ensure that the approach to our Beechen Lane gate has sufficient manoeuvre room for heavy plant and large lorries. They have created a compound for their equipment in the field immediately to the left of our gate and this will involve a tight u turn to move equipment from the compound into the inclosure. Once the main work commences it is likely that the main gravel track up to Limewood will be closed for safety reasons as there will be deep drill pits and other obstacles. In the cicumstances if you walk in from the Beechen Lane end, take the left fork where the gravel track splits.
As parking at the end of Beechen Lane may be difficult and restricted at times, we have been given permission to park in the bays at the boarded-up building immediately opposite Hilary Close in Beechen Lane. If spaces there are full, we can also park in front of the main building immediately on your left as you turn into Beechen Lane (opposite the vets). It will be helpful (but not essential) if you have a Pondhead window sticker to identify your vehicle – if you haven’t got one yet, please ask the task leaders for one.
As an alternative, both Bolton’s Bench (top section) and Parc Pale car parks in Beaulieu Road are only a short walk from Pondhead and there is also a small layby a little further down the Beaulieu Road on the left going in the Beaulieu direction. Parc Pale may be subject to Forestry England’s winter car park closure around early November.
As events from 28 September onwards will be starting from the charcoal kiln area, you may find these options and the walk into Pondhead just as convenient. Please do not park on verges. If you are not sure where the kiln area is situated, please phone the task leaders who will provide directions. There will also be lorries using the Beaulieu Road gate from time to time so please watch out for heavy vehicles.
After the cancellation of last year’s programme as a consequence of the pandemic, we look forward to welcoming you back into Pondhead to continue our award winning work. While the sewer works is an inconvenience in the short term it will not stop us having an enjoyable programme once again.
Thanks for your continuing support.
